Junior and Adult Tennis Fitness Programs &
Training
Q: What separates an experienced general fitness trainer from an experienced sports-specific
fitness trainer?
A: Actual competitive playing experience in the particular sport.
If you're looking to hire a training professional to improve your junior's tennis fitness, there is no
substitute for hiring one that has the combination of training experience AND competitive tennis
playing experience. There are many experienced trainers out there, but just as you wouldn't take
tennis lessons from a pro who has never played tennis, you probably wouldn't want to take tennis
fitness advice from a trainer who does not play the sport - no matter how much general experience
he/she has? As most of you know and understand, reading about a sport IS NOT the same as
playing it.
LaRue is a certified personal trainer with over 14 years of personal training experience, AND over 17
years of competitive tennis playing experience! He has used this unique blend of skill and
knowledge to develop his Tennis Fitness programs for junior and adult players. He has used his
program to train junior and adult tennis players of all levels, including several nationally ranked
"elite" juniors, and adult beginner, league and tournament players.
He continues to play tournament and league tennis, and has written several articles on the subject
of tennis fitness and health. His articles have appeared in such national and regional publications
as the Tennis Life Magazine, and the Mid-Atlantic Sports Digest.
Here are just three ways in which this unique combination of experience and skill in training and
tennis will help you improve your Tennis Fitness:
1. It will help ensure that you are getting fitness advice and exercise programming that's
specifically targeted to the sport of tennis, and not just a general fitness program.
2. You can be confident that you're speaking to someone who truly understands your physical
needs as a tennis player, since he is a competitive player himself.
3. He understands the specific physical demands and biomechanics of stroke production and
movement as he is also dedicated to the sport, and to improving his own fitness for competition.
Muscular strength, endurance, agility, balance, flexibility, and power are all necessary to develop a
well-rounded game, and help avoid injury. If you or your child are spending hours on the court
perfecting tennis strokes and strategy, it's equally important that time is spent becoming stronger,
more agile, and flexible. Improved tennis fitness will not only allow a player to take better advantage
of the strokes that they're developing, but will also help reduce the risk of injury from hitting
countless numbers of tennis balls.
Tennis Fitness Program and Training
After an initial tennis fitness assessment, LaRue will design a program for the junior or adult player
that specifically addresses his or her particular needs. Private, pairs, or small groups (3-5) sessions
can be arranged. LaRue's program will include the following elements designed to improve the
player's strength, power, agility, endurance, and flexibility:
- resistance training
- aerobic and anaerobic training
- speed and agility work
- power training
- core training
- flexibility work
Team Training
Team training can be challenging and fun! Why not grab your teammates for some exercise that will
challenge you and increase your fitness level for tennis? On-court drills and exercise can be
tailored to your team's specific needs.
